After just a few posts I have already received some pretty harsh criticism. Here are a few of the more kind examples. "Stop going to just pizza places." "Put more pictures up." "Spend more than $6.50 on dinner, cheapskate." And my favorite "Get an editor, you write like a 4th grader." I'll do my best to address a few of these, but as far as spending more money and learning to write good, don't hold your breath.
Anyways, after a long day yesterday it just felt like a burrito day. Wanting to go somewhere authentic and trying to avoid chains, we decided on Chicano's. After heading south and crossing the train tracks, we arrived at the restaurant. This is a new location for Chicano's which used to be located in a residential neighborhood. It now has more of a diner feel and less of a sitting in someone's kitchen feel (which I enjoyed). But what it loses in charm, it makes up for in easier parking and more tables.
As we decided on what to order, they brought out some chips and salsa. I am not exactly sure what was in the salsa, but it was really tasty. Be sure to have a Jarrito's nearby as it definitely has a good kick to it. I decided on a 'wet' (1.50 extra) beef burrito ($5.50) and 3 tacos (Mexican sausage, beef tongue and chicken) a dollar each.
The tacos were simple with just a little bit of onion, choice of meat, and a dash of sauce. This was really all they needed. The Mexican sausage was very crispy, the beef tongue was moist, and the chicken was.....chicken.
As you can see the burrito was in fact "wet" covered in sauce and cheese with a side of lettuce and tomato. It had good bulk to it and was certainly great value for only $5.50, especially considering I spend at least that when I go to Taco Bell. Mmmmhmmm Taco Bell. Ha. My favorite part of the Burrito was that in addition to rice, beans, and beef they snuck in some cut up grilled jalepeno pepper. After eating I realized that I didn't even ask for any hot sauce, which doesn't happen often and is a testament to a particularly tasty meal.
Almost finished it all :) A good burrito, with good company, was just what was needed for a rainy/sleety Scranton spring evening. But be careful an important side effect is the necessity take a nap immediately after you are finished eating (and possibly not wake up until the next morning).
Thanks for reading. Keep eating NEPA.
It should be noted that they only offer one true veg option - a burrito on the lunch menu - but will serve it any time of day. The chips are thick and crisp, the salsa and guac top-notch. They only had one waiter working while I was there, but he was attentive and kind. And while I felt like I was eating dinner in someone's triple-wide in Mobile, Alabama, it was worth it if only for the fiery alarm-clock deuce the following morning.
ReplyDeleteParking really is easy when it's someone else parking the car...
ReplyDeleteI may be mistaken, but I think you got the prices a little wrong. I think the wet burrito was an additional $1.50
ReplyDeleteAhhh. Good point. My bill was a few dollars more than I expected. This would explain it. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteNEPA Taster, the real test of a restaurant's food is how well you play flag football after eating it. Do you have any thing to comment on this?
ReplyDeleteAlso, can you please refer me to the owner of that hand in the nacho-dip-shot? I see a promising career in hand modeling right before my eyes :)
I love the before and after for the burrito. Looks like most of it found a happy home.
